O'Neil she was still in high school times during the auditions, auditioned for Canadian Idol's 3rd season within the early months of 2005. She advanced into the top 100 rounds due to the fact that judges were awed at her singing performances. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges, however she suffered significant losses in the Top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed into the bottom three and the bottom two spots, respectively. They were stunned by the decision, and told the audience they believed that Melissa was the most talented contestant. O'Neil did not make it to the bottom 3 again after an impressive string of performance. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, where O'Neil made it to the final two in the contest. Werner predicted that the morning newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian the prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
